I consider Pentatonix the best a capella group of all times. These kids put an incredible spin on the most famous and popular songs, making them their own. The mixture of their talents is so fresh and on point, it’s impossible not to love them. This time, Pentatonix ambitiously takes on Queen’s legendary “Bohemian Rhapsody.” You would think that without the instruments this composition would fall flat, but these kids will surprise you. And can we get a special shout-out to Mitch for his electric guitar imitation?! Please, SHARE.
Pentatonix consists of Scott Hoying (baritone lead), Mitch Grassi (tenor lead), Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo-soprano lead), Avi Kaplan (vocal bass, vocal percussion, bass lead), Kevin Olusola (vocal percussion, beatboxing, cello). The group began with Kirstin, Mitch, and Scott, who were schoolmates at Martin High School in Arlington, Texas. For a local radio show competition to meet the cast of Glee, they had arranged and submitted a trio version of “Telephone,” that gained attention on YouTube. Joined by Avi and Kevin, the quintet successfully auditioned for the third season of The Sing-Off. Pentatonix became the winner of the show, receiving $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music. When Sony’s Epic Records dropped the group after The Sing-Off, the group started its YouTube channel. With over 13 million subscribers, Pentatonix’s channel is currently the 13th most-subscribed music video channel.
Pentatonix have won three Grammy Awards: they were the first a capella act to win Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella, doing so in 2015 and won 2016, and Best Country Duo/Group Performance in 2017.
The group also does a lot of philanthropy work, supporting LGBTQ community, “United We Sing” Kenya project, the Mass General Cancer Center, etc.
Pentatonix appeared on Sesame Street in 2014. The same year, members of the group were presenters at the American Music Awards. In 2015, Pentatonix was an Opening act for “Piece by Piece Tour” with Kelly Clarkson. They also appeared on the Fox television show Bones, in the episode “The Strike In The Chord,” and had a cameo role in Pitch Perfect 2. In 2016, Pentatonix made a guest appearance on The Voice, performing “Jolene” alongside Miley Cyrus.
