French pair skaters Vanessa James and Morgan Ciprés are fantastic athletes with a gorgeous artistic ability and they impress the audience and judges whenever they take the ice. They are always impressive, but their performance at the International Skating Union’s World Team Trophy 2017 competition in Tokyo, Japan, was particularly stunning. They performed a choreographed routine to Disturbed’s rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s classic hit “The Sound of Silence” and blew everyone away with their flawless skate. International level skaters like this French pair make the sport of figure skating look remarkably easy. But, anyone who has taken to the ice with those sharp, thin blades on their feet knows that even the basics are hard to master. To skate like these competitors is something else entirely. Some may be reluctant to admit that figure skating is a true “sport”, but it’s hard to deny that these skaters are athletes. They train endlessly, often for several hours a day, seven days a week, for years on end to reach this level of competition. Not only do they train as skaters, but dance and even strength and fitness training are a major part of their routine. To do well in this type of competition, skaters must sacrifice their time and freedom to succeed.
On top of being top athletes, these skaters are artists – much like ballerinas or other dancers. You may think of ice skating as a stuffy sport with classical music and sparkly costumes, but this pair shows that skating can be powerful and modern, with simple costumes and popular music. In this particular routine, everything falls into place. They impress with their athletic and artistic skill and their pure emotion can be felt as they skate. Stunning!
